Introduction - Who we are and what we do.
In short, the Stumptown Shooters Pyrotechnics Club is a self-described, loose-knit group of crazed nutcases whose desire to cause controlled explosive mayhem drove them into conformity. In its 12 to 14 year history (no one remembers for sure), the Shooters have evolved into a more safety-minded group who now belong to the Iowa Pyrotechnics Association (IPA) and the Pyrotechnics Guild International, Incorporated (PGII). Fourteen of our members are Certified Instructors and teach the PGI Shooter Certification courses for the State of Iowa, also in Illinois, South Dakota, Michigan, Wyoming, and Wisconsin. In addition to the PGI Certification Courses, Stumptown Shooters Gene Zdrazil and Scott Bemer Founded F.E.S.T (Firework Education and Safety Training, Incorporated) a 501C Corporation founded in 2003 to provide Safety Education to Fire Officials and Code Enforcers Nationwide. The Stumptown Shooters are proud to be actively involved with aiding this Organization in making the art of pyrotechnics a safer one for all as well. Our not-for-profit, all-volunteer club sponsors 6 or 8 Club Shoots and does some select Sponsored shows each year in and around the Midwest. In addition to the 4th of July pre/post Shows, the Club took on the 4th of July Shoot in Southaven Mississippi (a suburb of Memphis, TN) in 2003. In 2004 and 2005 we did a 4th of July Shoot in Maryville, MO. at Lake Mozingo and plan to stage that show again in 2006. The Stumptown Shooters shot 2 Barge Shows in 2003, a show on the Mississippi River for Burlington Steamboat Days and the first ever on-the-river Barge Show in Iowa City at the Iowa Memorial Union. Our Club Fund-Raiser is held the last Saturday in June and draws from 450-700 people each year. In 2004 and again in 2005, this was held in Riverside, IA in conjunction with the Annual "Trek Fest" Celebration. The theme is (of course) based on the Star Trek Original TV Series and featured a soundtrack based on the same. Some of our Shows can be viewed here on this site from the "Movies" Link on the left side of the page. Special pages are also provided for Safety, BATF and other Regulatory items of interest. Please feel free to wander around. Our Annual New Years Eve Shows (2 that night one at dark and one at the stroke of midnight) draw between 200 to 400 hardy souls who brave the Iowa Winters night to help us ring in the New Year the Stumptown way. Other shows in the immediate Johnson, Washington County area we have done or do annually include: Lone Tree Fall Fun Festival, North Liberty Fun Days, Johnson County 4H/FFA Fair, an Annual Fathers Day Shoot and KCJJ Radios Annual Miracle of Fire. (Unfortunately, the KCJJ Shoot was cancelled in 2004) and it is not known if this show will be held in the future or not. We are proud to have also helped stage the Opening Night Show with the IPA (Iowa Pyrotechnics Association) at the 2005 National PGII Convention held this past August in Mason City, IA. It showcased products from fireworks vendors and manufacturers from around the world. Our choreography theme was based on Mason Citys dual claim to fame arising from early Rock & Roll and Mason City born Meredith Willsons world acclaimed The Music Man. The club holds Federal permits for Manufacture/Sale, Intra/Interstate Purchase & Transport. We have our own storage bunker and custom shell building Manufacturing facility. Many of our members are into custom shell building and competition shell building. We also are blessed with some skilled Lance-set builders. Our custom set pieces have gone far beyond the simple Welcome, Happy New Year and Flags which most groups use.
